Liquidarte – Emiliano Cecchi – Simone Meneghello: the trace, the limit, the memory

Between paper, overwriting and silence, Simone Meneghello’s work investigates the extreme limit of language, transforming the word into a trace and art into a space of resistance. Born in Milan in 1973, Simone Meneghello is a significant and articulated presence in the panorama of contemporary Italian art. After art high school, he continued his studies in scenography at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, immediately developing a personal language oriented towards the interaction between space, language and matter. His practice moves transversally between installation, sound performance, photography, visual poetry and conceptual work, with an approach that aims at density rather than synthesis, stratification rather than reduction.

The limit of language

At the center of his research is the theme of the limit of language. Paper, frequently present in his works, is not just a physical support, but an essential material: it is achromatic, textual, volumetric. It is also the place where language manifests itself in its extreme condition — overwritten, stratified, rendered indecipherable. His installations are made up not of legible words or selective graphic traces, but of overwritings: completely saturated texts, in which decoding is impossible and reading is replaced by an act of observation. It is not a question of communicating, but of exposing the impossibility of language to contain complete meaning. In this context, every word loses its primary function to become residue, visual body, existential trace. The artist does not erase, does not select, does not subtract: he superimposes, loads, acts on the page as a place of conflict between expression and silence.

Works such as crossings

A significant example is Marco Polo’s Path (2024), a site-specific installation conceived for the Thetis Space in Venice, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the death of the Venetian traveller. Fifty white encyclopedic volumes, aligned along a thirty-metre path, host overwritings derived from the Milione. Here, the path becomes a visual form of thought, the book becomes terrain, the word becomes opaque matter. In Fondamenta – o dell’evidenza dellimito (2024), presented in the Palladian villa of Caldogno, Meneghello investigates the concept of limit not through subtraction but through density. The work neither alludes nor tells: it exposes. There is no message to decipher, but a direct confrontation with the tension between the presence and impossibility of language.

Literary resonances

The interest in the word also translates into a series of interdisciplinary dialogues with figures of twentieth-century literature. The projects Meneghello meets Pavese and Meneghello meets Pasolini — created between 2023 and 2025 — reflect on the irreducibility of poetic language and its permanence as a trace. Added to these is the new work Meneghello meets Borges, which will be inaugurated on 9 December 2025 at the Blue Gallery in Venice: a further step in the comparison between word and threshold, between text and indecipherability. In Primeval (2025), a permanent installation at Spazio Thetis, the relationship between time, matter and writing is expressed in the essential form of a work that aspires to suspension, where language is not content but an imprint.

An aesthetics of resistance

Simone Meneghello builds a coherent path around the limit of language, its crisis and its obstinate permanence. His is an art that does not communicate, but exposes: it does not tell, but puts into action. Each work is a dense body, a visual interference, an invitation to silence and non-verbal listening. In a cultural context dominated by the logic of transparency and immediacy, Meneghello’s artistic act takes the form of formal and ethical resistance. The word returns to being an object, paper a place of tension, the sign a threshold between the visible and the ineffable.
